The Challenge
Rob contacted Blackburn Foundation Repair after noticing water seeping up through his floorboards. He wasn’t sure where the moisture was coming from and was concerned there could be a larger underlying issue. Beyond the visible water problem, Rob was unaware of any additional risks within his home — including potential radon exposure.
The Solution
Anthony Viereck completed a thorough inspection to identify the source of the water intrusion. After checking behind the dishwasher, under the sink, and behind the refrigerator, he determined the issue was caused by a poor water line connection at the back of the fridge. Fortunately, this turned out to be a simple and affordable fix that could be handled by an appliance professional.
While on site, Anthony also performed a full basement inspection. One foundation wall showed signs of failure, and there were additional areas of water intrusion. Most importantly, radon testing revealed levels as high as 47 pCi/L, well above the EPA’s recommended action level.
Rob had no prior knowledge of radon or the health risks it can pose — a concerning discovery given that his family spends a significant amount of time at home and that Rob personally spends many hours in the basement caring for an indoor garden.
The Results
Understanding the urgency of the radon exposure, Rob chose to move forward with addressing the radon issue immediately. Due to the timing around the holidays, he plans to take a phased approach for the remaining basement improvements, including six new window wells, waterproofing, and a sump pump installation, which will be completed shortly after Christmas using Blackburn’s financing options.
Rob expressed appreciation for Anthony’s thoroughness and transparency throughout the inspection. While the original water concern turned out to be a simple fix, he was grateful that serious hidden issues were uncovered and clearly explained. Rob also valued Blackburn’s willingness to work with him over the coming months to restore his basement and protect his family’s long-term health and safety.
