French drains, or drain tile systems have numerous disadvantages. When they are part of a basement waterproofing retrofit application they must be installed at the footer, deep in the earth. This necessitates the removal of porches or decks, sidewalks and landscaping not to mention any underground utilities that might be in the way as well. Creating new problems when you’re trying to fix your leaking basement makes no sense.

If your French drain installation is successful it can still have a limited or even temporary, effective lifespan due to sediments and debris that are picked up by groundwater as it passes through the newly disturbed soil. Loose, muddy water can enter the drain tile and cause it to become clogged from prolonged use.

Installation lower than the footer can undermine the support of the foundation too, leading to settling of the foundation and, possibly, structural damage.
